Career & Ambition

Chase work worth being proud of.

Ambition without direction just produces busyness. This is about choosing what to build a career on top of.

Skills & learning

The market changes fast enough that "what you learned in school" runs out eventually — staying employable (or building something) now means treating learning as ongoing, not a phase that ends.
You don't need to become an expert in everything adjacent to your field. Pick the 1-2 skills that would actually move the needle for where you want to go, and go deep there rather than shallow everywhere.
Learning by doing beats learning by watching. Courses and videos are useful for direction, but the skill only actually sticks once you've applied it to something real — a project, a task at work, a side thing.

Networking

Networking isn't collecting contacts, it's building a small number of genuine relationships over time. Quality beats volume by a mile.
Give value before you ask for anything. Share something useful, make an intro, actually engage with what someone's doing — the "ask" lands a lot better once there's something in the relationship already.
Most opportunities come through people, not job boards or cold applications — so treat networking as a long-term habit that runs alongside your career, not a thing you panic-do only when job hunting.
This applies whether you're climbing a career ladder or building your own thing — the "who you know" effect is just as real in business as it is in employment.
That doesn't have to be limited to your industry either — surrounding yourself with ambitious people generally, even outside your field, keeps the bar high. The Herd's full of people chasing their own version of this, worth tapping into if you can.

Work ethic

Showing up consistently and doing the unglamorous parts properly is what actually separates people over a few years — not talent, not luck, just who kept doing the work when it wasn't exciting (see Discipline & motivation in Mindset & Clarity).
Reliability is underrated. Being the person who does what they said they would, on time, is a bigger career asset than most flashy skills.
Whether you're employed or building your own thing, the standard's the same: do the boring reps, and the results tend to follow with a lag.
Most people wildly overestimate the cost of just trying — asking for the raise, pitching the idea, having the hard conversation — because they're picturing judgment that mostly never actually shows up. If the real downside of trying is genuinely small, that's a sign your bar for doing it should be lower.
Your circumstances might genuinely not be your fault — but you're still the only person who can act on changing them. Waiting for things to be fair before you take responsibility for your next move just costs you time you don't get back.

Long-term vision

Traditional career and building your own thing pull for different things — a job gives you stability, structure, and (usually) faster feedback on whether you're improving; your own venture gives you upside and control but a lot more uncertainty. Neither is "better," they suit different stages and risk appetites.
It's fine to hold a long-term ambition (own business, senior role, whatever it is) without knowing the exact path there yet — the specific route usually only becomes clear once you're a few steps in.
Revisit your direction every so often rather than never questioning it or changing it every other week. Ambition needs enough time to actually test whether a path's working.
Watch out for the "arrival fallacy" — the assumption that hitting the big milestone (the promotion, the launch, the number) will bring lasting satisfaction. It gives you a real lift, but you adapt to it faster than expected and start wanting the next thing — worth knowing that going in so it doesn't blindside you or make success feel hollow when it doesn't stick. Comparing your progress to someone else's quietly makes this worse — same trap as the FYP point in Mindset & Clarity.
Being busy and being productive aren't the same thing — motion without an actual direction just feels like progress. Worth checking every so often that what you're grinding on is actually pointed at the vision, not just keeping you occupied.

Money (brief)

Ambition and money aren't the same thing, but ignoring the money side of career decisions isn't smart either — factor it in as one input, not the whole decision.
Building your own thing usually means slower, less predictable income early on in exchange for more upside later — worth going in with eyes open about that trade-off rather than being surprised by it.
Building skills that are valuable outside your current employer specifically is its own form of security — it makes you harder to replace where you are and easier to hire somewhere else if you ever need the option.

Trying this one out? Tell the herd how it's going.
